1. The condition of the roads in The Gambia: Although many places are accessible with sedan cars for most of the year during the rain season many areas require a four wheel drive rental vehicle, or at least think about renting a vehicle with higher clearance. If you are not planning to hit the rough roads than the Peugeot’s 406 (sedans with A/C) are your ideal choice. Remote areas in the rural area’s like , Soma, Georgetown or Basse require four wheel drive cars. Generally it is advisable to rent the largest car you can afford as driving on Gambia’s gravel roads can be reasonably taxing and the additional stability and ground clearance offered by larger vehicles does make things safer and easier. If you are driving in the wet season (from July-October) heavy rains can make some roads impassable for sedan & smaller vehicles –if you are travelling during this period you should seriously consider renting a larger 4X4.
2. During summer, daytime temperatures throughout The Gambia can be extreme so a rental car with air conditioning is desirable.
3. How many people will be in the hire car? For your own convenience, if you are planning to travel with more than 3 persons you will probably need to upgrade to a bigger car.
4. Route planning is essential, The Gambia is not a big country but many tourists seriously underestimate distances and times required to travel certain distances. We are always happy to offer suggestions on your route.
